Over the past three weeks, we have explored the concept of outsiders from a variety of characters and texts. As you begin to create your individual definition, reflect upon the qualities and characteristics that are found in one or more characters. This will help you create a main idea, or THESIS STATEMENT, for your informative essay. Review the table below with the most common qualities and think about how you would answer the essential question "What makes someone an outsider?"

Based upon the writing prompt, you will need to create a 5-paragraph essay. It will include the following structure:

Introductory paragraph with a 3-point thesis statement
3 detail paragraphs using textual evidence (shown in the table below) and elaboration (how the evidence applies to your main idea)
Concluding paragraph with restatement of your thesis statement
You have the choice between writing about ONE character we have read about and including 3 qualities they have as an outsider:

The WASPs are considered outsiders because they were physically different than other male pilots, discriminated against due to their gender, and not properly recognized for their service for decades.

You can also write about THREE characters and the one outsider quality they all share*:

Harry Potter, Cinderella, and Jackie Robinson are all considered outsiders because they all had to overcome adversity to meet their potential.
