Please choose ONE of the following prompts in order to write a personal journal response to a theme in “The Nest”

Your journal should be written in proper paragraphs and should be at least 250 words in length.

Jimmy is very unhappy in the story when his mother tries to control where he goes, but she says “My decisions are made for your own good Jimmy”. Do you agree? In your opinion, do you think parents should control their teenagers' whereabouts and the people they spend time with? Why or why not?

Based on what the other parents know about Paul, do you think their decision to keep their children from participating in the hike was fair?
Have you ever been treated unfairly in your life? How did it make you feel? Did your experiences help you relate to Paul and his situation?

In the story Jimmy makes a difficult decision by going against what his mother tells him. Do you think he did it to rebel against his mother or to help Paul feel better? Think of a time where you had to make a difficult decision. What did you feel like?

In a 10-12 sentence response-style paragraph, explore the degree to which you agree or disagree with faulkner’s message. “i believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. he is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. the poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. it is his privilege to man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. the poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to him endure and prevail” (faulkner 773-775).
