Revealing Cultures The culture of a people influences the art and writing they produce. Not only do works of art and literature depict the culture of their subjects, but they also reveal the traditions, values, opinions, tastes, and biases of their authors and audiences.

You will now evaluate the depiction of a culture in a work of literature and look for hints about the author's culture and the culture of the intended audience.

First, read Ella D'Arcy's "White Magic," which is provided below. D'Arcy wrote the story in Victorian England, which was an era marked by strict gender and societal roles.
As you read, make note of the cultural behaviors, traits, opinions, and biases mentioned in the text.
Next, you will write a three-paragraph essay about aspects of the culture depicted in the work. In each of the first two paragraphs, focus on one cultural element (e. g., a behavior, trait, opinion, or bias). Include a quote of at least one sentence from the work to illustrate each example. Each paragraph should contain at least five sentences.
In the third paragraph, discuss what you can determine about the author's culture (and view of cultural constraints) based on the story. This paragraph should also include at least five sentences, and it should provide a description of the author's attitude toward her culture.
Review your work to confirm that you used proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation in your response.
