An 'autobiography' is a retelling of someone's life that was written by that person. You could write an autobiography of your own life. If you write the story of another person's life, it's called a 'biography. For example - David Copperfield (1850) by Charles Dickens and Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951).
