Passage: In retaliation for the “Boston Tea Party,” the British Parliament closed the port of Boston in May 1774 and virtually abolished provincial (local) self-government in the colony of Massachusetts. These actions stimulated resistance across the land. That summer, the lower house of the Massachusetts legislature secretly invited all 13 colonies to attend a convention. In response, on the fifth of September, 55 delegates representing every colony but Georgia assembled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They convened at Carpenters' Hall and organized the First Continental Congress.
