Rain

In the downpour, there was a lone man strolling.

She would never have noticed him if she hadn't been staring aimlessly out the window late into the night. Raindrops pelted the home incessantly, assaulting her ears with a static-like sound. The crisscrossing rain outside, pushed at different angles by the wind, obstructing her eyesight. A sliver of light fought valiantly under a streetlight, and there was undoubtedly a guy walking through it.

What on earth was he doing out in those weather? It was becoming perilous.

The guy merged into the darkness as he approached the edge of a small circle of light. She waited for him to return at the next light with bated breath.

Her eyes widened and her heartbeat began to speed as she waited. It was strange, exciting, and bizarre all at the same time. He had to know what he was doing, right? Nobody in their right mind would walk in such hazardous conditions.

A powerful gust of wind blasted a sheet of rain into the guy as he resurfaced. As she heard a crescendo in loudness, he staggered. The guy had vanished by the time the sound faded back to its regular static.

She was suddenly unsure of herself. Maybe he was in need of assistance? She couldn't see him clearly, but why would anyone be out in the middle of a storm at this hour? What if she was the only one who had seen him? She could be the only person who can assist him right now.

A bolt of lightning illuminated the night as she paused. The man was bent over a bundle in his arms, she saw. He looked panicked and wide-eyed, yet he seemed determined to defend whatever he was carrying.

He vanished, only to reappearance at the streetlight directly outside her house. As he battled on, she noticed a little hand reaching out of the bundle. He could see the road ahead of him; she lived on a crossroads. As he proceeded on his way, he didn't miss a beat.

Her heart skipped a beat when thunder clapped overhead. In her ears, it rang, crunched, and smashed. For two long seconds, every sound was drowned out as she watched a pair of headlights emerge out of nowhere. They crashed with the man, and both of them vanished in an instant.

She yelled angrily.

As she dashed out of her room, she collided with her mother, who had been in to see how she was doing.

“What's the matter, sweetie?”

“There was a man!” said the narrator. It's raining outside! He's no longer alive. He was just struck by a car!” Tears unexpectedly overtook her, and she couldn't breathe. Her mother drew her close as she tried to regain control of her heaving throat.

“Are you still haunted by how your father died after all these years?”

She was taken aback for a minute. Her father had never occurred to her. “No! It was true; there was a man outside!”

“Don't worry, sweetie; it was a traumatic event for you. And it took place on a night like this.”

She shoved her mother back and dashed to the window, furious. She pushed her cheek against the chilly window and craned her neck to get a better glimpse because it was too dark to see anything.

“I swear to God... I saw him.”

Her mother regretfully shook her head. “It's only the rain, dear,” says the narrator. It's a dreadful, weird rain that reminds me of something bad.”

She heard the door close behind her, but she continued to stare out the window. Nothing. There was no evidence of anything.

Maybe it was just the rain after all.
