What are modal verbs and how do we use them?

A modal verb is a type of verb that is used to indicate modality – that is: likelihood, ability, permission, request, capacity, suggestions, order, obligation, or advice

. In English, we have "will" and "would," "shall" and "should," "can" and "could," and "may," "might," and "must." "I might come to the office later." "We should look for a new apartment." "Can you help me move my sofa?" So, we use modal verbs in English to talk about possibility, yes, and ability too, as with "can" and "could." But we also use them in patterns relating to giving advice and asking for advice, as well as making offers and requests, too.
