Focus in on paragraphs 8-11 to answer this question. What makes Deception Island an extreme destination? Write a few sentences explaining why extreme tourists might choose to travel here.
Travelers who want to go to the ultimate extreme could board a ship bound for Antarctica. A two-day sail from the southern tip of Argentina ends at one of the most bizarre islands an adventurous traveler could imagine. It’s called Deception Island because within the C-shaped island hides one of the safest harbors in the world.

9Other surprises await tourists of Deception Island. Its harbor is actually a caldera, or mouth, of an active volcano submerged under the water. Steam from beneath the shore’s volcanic sand warms the freezing water around the harbor’s edges. The last thing most visitors to an Antarctic island expect is to be in danger of getting scalded, but the risk is real. In 1920–1921, the water there boiled, stripping paint from ships’ hulls. So, bathers must choose their spots carefully, seeking out the perfect location between boiling hot and ice cold.

10The island was first settled by Norwegian whalers, who left when people switched from using whale oil to using petroleum. The last year-round inhabitants lived in a British research station until a volcanic eruption destroyed it in 1969. A look behind the cheerful facades of the few remaining buildings reveals the ruins of abandoned settlements.

11Today, Deception Island has temporary residents during the summer when Chile and Spain operate stations there. Deception Island’s only year-round residents are its wildlife, including a large colony of chinstrap penguins. The island gets its share of visitors, though. Up to three tour groups land there each day during the summer. Antarctic fur seals spend the summer there as well.
