Read the story below (it is the same one from the lesson). Do a close read and then write an analysis. You can choose from the two options below. Your analysis paragraphs must include a topic sentence (or thesis), proof sentences, and a conclusion. Option 1

Describe what kind of person Kye is and how this affects how she views her current situation. Use evidence from text, including quotes from this text to prove what you say.

Option 2

Pick three words in the text that struck you as the most important. You cannot pick the character's name for this assignment. What affect does each have on the text? Why did the author use these words and not a different word? And, what does this word tell you about Kye's current situation?

Kye grimaced, her head throbbing from the merciless attack of the desert sun. Shielding her eyes, she scanned the landscape as keenly and matter-of-factly as a scientist. She saw tall, delicate stalks of ocotillo, and low agave plants with their long, fat, spiky leaves outstretched in a shrug.
My mule must be miles away by now, she thought, remembering how it had reared up and thrown her at the sight of a lizard. But she felt strangely calm, and ready to do what she must. The road lay fifteen miles to the east. Dismaying as the thought of that hike was, she envisioned herself sending her friends photos along the way. Ha ha, they will bow down to my heroism!
