The paragraph shows Veronica's mother's displeasure in her artistic skills of playing the piano.Veronica wanted to be a pianist & won several completions too, but her mother told her to study law because she believed no one could make a living out of being a pianist (she considered the job of a pianist as low & cheap...a job where people don't make much money).In the paragraph, Veronica's mother says that she sent Veronica to study the piano only so that her future husband could show her off at parties (her mother told that she needed to have some artistic talents so that her husband would be pleased).Veronica's mother didn't want Veronica to be a pianist although Veronica wanted to become one.Veronica's mother chose the job of being a lawyer because it was the profession of the future (meaning :- it was a high-rising job & people earned good money as well).
