What is the Power of Tides?
1
What is the power of tides? Some old superstitions
make odd claims regarding the influence of tides upon
Earth. For example, one superstition claims that a new
tide is an unlucky time to start a new project. In the
scientific community, claims regarding the power of
tides are much larger in scope.

Part B
Articles can be found floating around the Web about
anxious scientists who fear the Moon's gravitational
effect on Earth might eventually cause Earth to become
tidally locked with the Sun. There is a gravitational pull
on a planet as it revolves around a star. The side
closest to the star gets a stronger tug, which over time
stretches the planet, causing it to bend out of shape.
Tidal locking occurs when a planet's rotation becomes
synchronized with its partner's orbit, resulting in the
same side of the planet always being exposed to the
star. If this were to happen, one half of the planet would
roast while the other half would freeze. Also, high and
low tides as they occur now would be greatly altered.
This would affect ocean currents and other important
geologic processes that help to sustain life on Earth
