Writing Assignment You may use any book, short story, or play you read in school or on your own. 500-750 words.
OPTION 1: Five Artifacts
Choose five artifacts from your book that best illustrate the happenings and meanings in the story. These artifacts are symbols that
represent important aspects of the story. For example, if the story was Snow White, you could include: poison apple, mirror, crown,
heart, small pair of pants, etc.
These artifacts could be items that represent different literary elements such as: setting, characters, themes, conflicts, imagery, plot,
etc.
Each artifact you choose will help tell the bigger story. Think about how we fill time capsules with items that represent our society. Each
item in a time capsule tells a small story that represents part of the bigger picture.
List your five artifacts and explain how each one tells an important part of the bigger story.

OPTION 2: Casting Call
Your book is a best seller and Hollywood is making it into a movie. You get to decide the cast. Who do you choose to play each of the
main characters? Cast at least three of the characters. This must be a book that has not been made into a movie already!
Include both of these points in your response:
Explain why you choose this particular actor/actress (looks, personality, previous work, special quality, etc.)
Which scene from the book do you use at the audition to see if the actor/actress is the best fit for the character? Why do you choose
this particular scene for the screen test?

OPTION 3: Alternate Outcome
Stories are made up of conflicts, consequences and solutions. Write about three conflicts in the story and how they were handled.
What were the consequences and solutions?
If one of these conflicts was handled differently, how would it change the outcome of the story? Explain.
Types of conflict found in stories
Person vs Person
Person vs Society
Person vs Self
Person vs Nature
Person vs Technology/Machine
Person vs Supernatural/Fate

OPTION 4: New Character
You show up as a character in the book. How would this addition impact the storyline?
Questions to consider:
How would you be introduced?
Who would you be? Describe your character
How would you interact with the other characters?
What part of the story would you influence? Would you change an outcome?
What new storyline would you add?
Would you work with the protagonist or against him/her?

OPTION 5: Book Sequel
Write a detailed plot summary for a sequel to this book. The sequel must have connections to the original story and be believable. Do not switch genres. For example, if the original book is a Young Adult romance, the sequel cannot be Sci Fi and set on another planet.
This must be a book that does not have a sequel already!
Questions to consider:
How long after the first book does the new story take place?
Why do you choose to continue this story?
What characters are still part of the story?
What storylines will continue into the sequel?
What new storylines will be introduced?
Focus on literary elements such as setting, characters, conflicts, theme, point of view, etc.

OPTION 6: Personal Reflection
Write a personal reflection on the book.
Questions to consider:
Why is this a favorite book of yours? Explain your reasons.
What did you learn from reading this book?
How do you relate to the story? Do you relate to any of the characters in particular?
How is this story relevant? Why does it matter?
How does this story make you feel?
What is your favorite part? Why?
What do you like or dislike about the characters?
Do any of the characters remind you of anyone you know?
Does this story have any weak points? What do you think is missing in the story or needs to be developed better?
Did you make any predictions while you were reading this story? Did they come true?
Were there any parts you didn’t understand?
Were there parts that triggered strong emotions? Anger? Sadness? Excitement? Surprise? Fear? Joy? Disgust? Anticipation?
