Compulsory voting is a system in which all eligible members in a country are required to vote in elections or otherwise cast a ballot for national, regional, or local elections. Approximately twenty countries around the world—including Australia, Belglum, Greece, Mexico, Peru, and Singapore-have such laws, requiring for all citizens to cast a vote for nearly all major elections in the country. If an eligible voter does not lodge a vote on polling day, he or she may be subject to fines or penalties. a Many in the United States argue that the country could benefit from a compulsory requirement to vote, citing evidence that suggests greater voter turnout were such a system in place. Others argue that such a mandate violates an individual's right - but not his or her obligation - to vote as described in the Constitution. Consider the implications of a compulsory voting system. Then write an essay in which you develop a position on the establishment of suc a system Support your argument with appropriate evidence.
