In the quotation "That's what literature is.

It's the people who came before us, trying to tell us about life and death by tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave! Pay attention to them!" The author is attempting to say that she sees literature as messages from the past, that people who wrote them were trying to tell us about life and death, and that reading can be a way to hear what they were saying so we don't make the same mistakes in the future.

i think it's either 'to expose the corruption of the communists in russia', or 'to criticize animal brutality by communists in russia.'
