Explanation: Just curious—will the incoming group be small enough to have individual members, in a discussion group setting, provide YOU with rules THEY believe are reasonable and just … or could divide the group into smaller groups (of 4–5) to discuss among themselves, and list for reporting out to the whole group their ideas. I suspect that this will not only generate a wonderful assortment of “rules” you could have presented … but they would have more buy-in and far less boredom and/or defensiveness and resistance.

How many rules do you plan to present to these young, impressionable, yet easily bored, “freshmen” … with short memories and a whole lot of other concerns bouncing around in their heads, at that time?

In any case, these rules you elicit or present must have a logical basis (perhaps with an example of how rule-breaking negatively affects the learning process and the school community … and they should always be presented as unadulterated positives, with only a few (or no) examples of the punishments that will be meted out for transgressions.
