However, as her mind is not clear, we see them in a jumbled, confused way. In this passage, Granny is remembering the time she was "jilted" at the altar by her boyfriend George, and how that hurt her. The smoke in the passage is meant to represent how her dream of having the life she wanted and had so carefully built was destroyed.
