Read the excerpt from dr. martin luther king’s “letter from birmingham jail.” i have tried to stand between these two forces, saying that we need emulate neither the "do nothingism" of the complacent nor the hatred and despair of the black nationalist. how does king support this claim? by listing churches who support his nonviolent stand by describing nonviolent direct action as a peaceful middle ground by urging church leaders to abandon their “do nothing” approaches by insisting that complacency is preferable to hatred and violence

The two forces that King mentions in the excerpt are two Negro groups with opposing views for the resistance movement. One of them is an extremist black nationalist group, notably Muslim movement and the other one is consisted of Negroes who are not involved to the resistance movement due to better economic conditions they have. King opposes both group's views in a way saying that by doing nothing like the second group or by spreading hatred towards the existing government there is only one way and it is called peaceful resistance. The correct answer is the second option -  by describing nonviolent direct action as a peaceful middle ground.

the true goal we seek is far above and beyond the ugly field of battle. when we resort to force, as now we must, we are determined that this force shall be directed toward ultimate good as well as against immediate evil. we americans are not destroyers — we are builders.
