Read the introduction to lena’s personal narrative, “my first solo.” the first time i a solo, my stomach was in knots. i could barely breathe, and i wasn’t sure a sound would come out when i opened my mouth to sing. despite my nerves, i was able to do it. my part certainly wasn’t perfect and may have been a little screechy, but i was proud of myself nonetheless. which word correctly fills in the blank?

The word "perform" means to represent a form of entertainment to an audience. In this case a solo voice is being perfomed. This can be confusing as we could probably use the word "sang". If she didn't use her voice but an instrument, "played" could be used. Although she actually sang, it is important to notice that she is doing it for the first time in front of an audience, that is the reason Iena is nervous. The simple fact of doing it in front of an audience and not doing it for practice or fun implies she is doing a performance.
