Why would the author want the reader to respect mercedes's opinion with regard to charles and hal? so that they do not make up their own minds about the men because the author does not want the reader to rush to judgement because the author wants the reader to use mercedes' opinion to understand their characters because the author does not trust the reader to think rationally
