An inference is a conclusion based upon evidence. An example of using inferential thinking happens with this story. I saw a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. On the parchment paper there were 3 rows of 5 cookies and 2 rows of 4 cookies. In the 2 rows of 4 cookies, there were also grease spots that indicated 2 cookies had been on the paper. When Jamie walked into the room, she was licking her lips, holding a glass of milk, and had a chocolate smear on the side of her mouth. From this story I can make the inference that Jamie ate the two cookies that are missing. The evidence of the missing cookies and the chocolate on her face are the pieces of evidence that lead to the conclusion.
