1.) Slavery directly affects families simply because people are seen as property. At any moment they can be separated. Eliza and her husband were married but they didn't have any legal documents until the passed the border. Babies and mothers could easily be separated. Eliza's master was going to sell her son so she had to run away because there was nothing in her legal power she could do about it. Eliza's husband, George  also had to go under cover and leave his family so that he could be free and help his family be free.

2.) To be a freed slave in America means almost nothing because they are still unable to do many things and can be just as easily sold back into slavery and no one would care or notice.
