  The Federalist Papers were intended to convince the State of New York to ratify the Constitution and answer any objections that might be raised about the Constitution (C & D).

  They were a collection of 85 articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to promote the ratification of the United States Constitution. It was a response to the "Anti-federalist papers" launched in the New York press which criticized the summit of the proposed Constitution to the states for its ratification.

  In defense of this Alexander Hamilton decided to wrote a measured defense and extense explanation of the proposed Constitution to the residents of the state of New York. The essays were published in the Independent Journal, the New York Packet and the Daily Advertiser between October 1787 and April 1788.
