He constantly had an internal struggle throughout the play about killing Duncan, especially as he was supposed to be loyal and protecting him. Shakespeare portraying Macbeth as very conscience-stricken by his deed of murdering the King, shows that he is still human and has feelings. If he did not have any moral suffering, then Macbeth would be an evil character that shows no empathy or remorse. But what makes the play a tragedy in the first place is that the readers do empathize with Macbeth, because he was hesitant and he does feel a lot of moral suffering. The lines specifically mean that Macbeth will never be able to get a good nights sleep because of how guilty he feels for killing the king. Even though Macbeth plotted to and completed the plan of killing the king, he is not a terrible person with no regard for anyone but himself. Giving Macbeth a worried conscious makes it so that the audience will care about him, even though he is a murderer. "
