Alexander Pope in “The Rap of the Lock” presents card game of “Ombre” as a war by metaphorically presenting Belinda and the Baron as generals and their cards as their armies battling each other (“Thus far both armies to Belinda yield; /Now to the baron fate inclines the field.”). He uses personification to make important cards (king, queen and jack) as living parties in the war. Pope also names those cards to seem more heroic (“Spadillio first, unconquerable lord! /Led off two captive trumps, and swept the board.”).
