I believe King would prefer to discuss the Vietnam War with his “fellow Americans” rather than Hanoi or the NLF because they were completely capable of fighting with the US.

And, because he was more concerned with domestic US opposition to American aggressiveness in Vietnam, his “fellow Americans” were the individuals he could convince.

Thus, the king said that he would rather talk to my fellow Americans because he thought the America should stop the war not Vietnam.
