The Scottsboro Affair, a trial between nine black teenagers and two white women, happened in the 1930s. The nine black boys were accused of rapping the two white women on a train in Alabama. The boys were found guilty. 
In the South, there were different rankings. If you were black, you were on the bottom. If you were a white female, you were in the middle. If you were a white male, you were at the top. White people got more respect than black people. Rich white people got more respect than poor white people.
