It explores the story of Bernice who moves into a new town where her cousin Marjorie lived and how Bernice struggles to fit in because she didn't know-how.

The first theme shows how Bernice is struggling to fit in and how no one in Marjorie's friends wanted to be friends with her. In the story, she says "I've decided," began Bernice without preliminaries, "that maybe you're right about things—possibly not. But if you'll tell me why your friends aren't—aren't interested in me I'll see if I can do what you want me to." In the 1920s as it shows in this story popularity for a girl was really important for girls because it was really difficult for a girl to attract boys if she wasn't popular.
