Brutus is the tragic hero in Julius Caesar, and his internal conflict is the force that drives the plot forward. There is a major contradiction within him. He is a good friend, and he loves Caesar. However, he is also a good citizen, and knows that Rome would be better off if Caesar was dead. He ends up killing him, but throughout the play, he cannot be sure whether this was in fact a noble act, or a cowardly one.
