Explain the difference between contour lines and relief and how they relate to elevation on a map.

Contour lines are lines that show places of equal elevation. For example, if you see one contour line going through St. Paul Minnesota, and the same line going through Denver Colorado (This isn't true because I don't think they have the same elevation), then the contour line is showing you that the Denver and St. Paul have the same elevation. However, relief is the distance in elevation between the highest point on a map and the lowest point on a map (based on elevation). Relief does not tell you the exact elevation of a place, whereas contour lines can. Contour lines are generally shown on topographical maps. I hope this helps!
