Why do you think the suez canal is an important waterway for world shipping?

The Suez Canal is a way of reaching the Mediterranean if you're in the Red Sea on a ship, and reaching the Red Sea if you're in the Mediterranean - without having to go all around Africa. It shortens the time of travel and very often the cost and is the only possibility for transporting goods that can spoil.

The peak above is part of the  sierra madre occidentals ,  a chain of volcanic mountains that runs through the middle of central america.
