    The City Beautiful Movement, born in the 1890s and 1900s, intended to reform American architecture and urbanism on the basis of the beautification and monumental grandeur of cities. The movement did not seek beauty for its own sake, but for the common good, to create moral and civic virtue of urban populations. Advocates believed that such beautification could thus promote a harmonious social order that would enhance the quality of life.

    The movement has emerged in major US cities in response to the growth and congestion of housing zones, a consequence of high birth rates, increased immigration and consolidation of rural migrations to cities. It lasted for several decades, and in addition to the monuments he left, he also strongly influenced urban planning throughout the 20th century, especially with regard to the subsequent creation of housing projects in the United States.
