Explain the two ways the atmosphere protects the earth

The first way that the atmosphere protects Earth is that it acts like a blanket on the Earth trapping the heat inside to make sure the planets is warm enough to sustain life. The atmosphere also though, shields the Earth from the Sun's harsh rays. The second way the atmosphere protects Earth is because it provides oxygen for people to breathe AND carbon dioxide for the plants. Then through the water cycle, living organisms can receive water.
