When did north korea and south korea separate from each other, and why did this happen?

the korean war was one of several military conflicts that occurred during the cold war, as the united states and its allies attempted to stop the spread of communism. this conflict began on june 25, 1950, when north korea, a communist nation, invaded south korea.

the soviet union occupied the north of korea, and the united states occupied the south, with the boundary between their zones being the 38th parallel. with the onset of the cold war, negotiations between the united states and the soviet union failed to lead to an independent and unified korea.
