El niño’s global impact the atmospheric and oceanic conditions of enso occur primarily in the tropical south pacific, but they impact climate worldwide. in normal years, the high-pressure system over the eastern pacific results in drier weather there; the low-pressure system over the western tropical pacific ocean results in rainy conditions there. these conditions are usually reversed during enso: in the eastern south pacific, normally drier areas such as peru and ecuador face heavy rains. heavier-than-usual rains are also found in the western and southeastern united states and in east-central africa. rains are so intense that hilly areas in these regions have an increased risk of flooding and landslides. conversely, normally rainy areas of eastern australia, indonesia, and the philippines face severely dry conditions, increasing the risk of wildfires in areas covered by vegetation already prone to them. droughts, wildfires, and disruptions in crop production also occur in southeastern africa and large parts of india, although wildfires are not widespread in india due to the largely agricultural use of land. tropical cyclones occur in the pacific, atlantic, and indian oceans every year. the frequency and intensity of these tropical cyclones is usually greater if, among other things, planetary winds remain strong, vertical wind shear (the change in wind speed or direction with height) is relatively low, and the surface temperature of ocean waters is relatively high. during enso, tropical storms intensify in the western and central pacific ocean due to warm waters and low wind shear, but weaken in the atlantic because enso events tend to create conditions that contribute to high wind shear in that area. the blocked upwelling of nutrient-rich, colder waters off the eastern pacific coasts of south america and the united states disrupts fisheries there. these are only some of the known changes that occur—the timing, nature, and extent of enso's effects are unpredictable. the map in this activity shows five target areas with different characteristics. use these characteristics to label the correct effect on these areas during an enso event: west coast united states: hilly area western atlantic ocean: hurricane-prone area eastern pacific coast near peru: upwelling southern india: monsoon rains northeastern australia: woodland drag the appropriate labels to their respective targets. each label may be used only once.
