Plate tectonics theory took decades to be accepted because choose one: climate, fossil distributions, and land shape offered conflicting evidence. most of wegener's ideas turned out to be wrong. wegener couldn't explain how continents moved. his research was not well known in the scientific community.

Alfred Wegener's research was based on his findings on the earth's surface at that time based on his beliefs, and the researches and theories he came across.  Some of the factors that he named were similar climates found across all the continents which were once the part of the same Super landmass Pangaea.
