What aspect of Earth uniqueness generates the Aurora (northern or southern lights) effect?

The aspect of the Earth uniqueness which generates the Aurora is as a result of the actions between the particles from the sun and those atoms found on the earth's surface.

For example, highly charged particles from the sun will hit the atoms on the earth's surface leading to the latter's electrons particles acquiring charges and move to high energy state.

Towards the evening, when the electrons drops back to its low energy state, it gives out beautiful light which is commonly called the Aurora due to its uniqueness and distinctness.
