Why are most unauthorized immigrants in the southwest?

I assume we're talking about the US. Most Illegal immigrants are in the southwest because that's where our country borders Mexico. There is also immigrant caravans that come from South America and other Central American countries that have to pass through Mexico to reach their destination.
