Earthquakes are caused by a slippery slope. When the pressure at the edge exceeds the collision, there is an earthquake that pulls the energy from the tides that move the crust and cause the tremors we feel. In California there are two plates - the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, which is the most earthquake prone are in north America.
