Desalination is a process that takes away mineral components from saline water. More generally, desalination refers to the removal of salts and minerals from a target substance, as in soil desalination, which is an issue for agriculture.

Filtration is a process used to separate solids from liquids or gases using a filter medium that allows the fluid to pass through but not the solid. The term "filtration" applies whether the filter is mechanical, biological, or physical. The fluid that passes through the filter is called the filtrate.

Distillation is the process of separating components of a mixture based on different boiling points. Examples of uses of distillation include purification of alcohol, desalination, crude oil refining, and making liquefied gases from air. Humans have been using distillation since at least 3000 BC in the Indus valley.

Reclamation is the process of claiming something back or of reasserting a right.
