About 55% of the world is urbanized and this is due to the differential rate of urbanisation in the world.

Urbanization the gradual process of becoming more urban and developed from rural or developing. About 68% of the world population is projected to become urbanized by the year 2050 according to the united nations estimates. Today the highly urbanized nation includes North America with about 82% of the population living in urban areas. Followed by Latin America as 81%, Europe as 74%, and 68% in Oceania. Asia and Africa have about 50 to 43% of the population living in urban areas. This suggests that the rate of urban population and growth of cities and towns is not fast as compared to the developed world. Also, different nations have experienced urbanization according to their level of industrial development.  Thus has changed the distribution of population which seems to be concentrated in urban centers of the world such as major metropolitan areas and towns. These are mainly for economic and administrative reasons.
