Some of the main sources of groundwater contamination are garbage dumps, whose polluting particles filter through the ground and reach the groundwater reservoirs, contaminating it and making it unfit for consumption; the use of fertilizers, pesticides and other agricultural inputs, which, like garbage, filter their toxic components through the earth; and the exploitation of fuels and minerals, through wells that are dug in the ground, whose residues are transferred to the water deposits, contaminating them.

This contamination makes the groundwater unusable, and that it in turn contaminates the land that surrounds it, affecting the quality of life of the people who live there.
