Os sucessivos ciclos econômicos característicos da Amazônia ao longo da história afetaram de maneira preponderante o desenvolvimento sustentável da região. Uma economia de ciclos tem como fundamento o preço alto de um determinado produto no mercado externo. Assim, os ganhos acarretados não se encontram naquela região, eles vêm de fora. Com o fim daquele produto ou sua substituição por um outro, a população local acaba sendo afetada.
