Hari Singh of Kashmir seeked assistance from India because shortly after the partition of India, Pakistani forces invaded Kashmir due to the dispute between India and Pakistan. Hari Singh wanted Kashmir to be independent but that was absurd. Pakistan had kept its eye on Kashmir and they attacked with the help of Pashtun tribesman . Hari Singh was in distress. Most of his people were Muslim and wanted to be part of Pakistan. Hari Singh was trying his best to lessen the revolts but he had no choice. Hari Singh was a Hindu and his only choice was to seek the assistance. India didn’t want a conflict with Pakistan just because of helping a sovereign nation, so they demanded ALL of Kashmir. Hari Singh signed a treaty that gave Kashmir special rights and handed over Kashmir. India sent its army to Kashmir though due to the presence of the Pakistani army, India failed to annex ALL of Kashmir, though they were able to take roughly 2/3 of Kashmir.
