How can the chain of islands that make up hawaii be used to show the direction the plate beneath them moving?

The chain of islands that make up the state of Hawaii are volcanic islands, which means that they are made of volcanoes.  We can tell which direction the plates are moving by the placement of newly-forming islands, formed by the eruptions of volcanoes because the movements of the tectonic plates are often times directly linked with the eruptions of volcanoes.
