How does the disorder affect the child mentally on sickle cell anemia ?

I think the chronic pain and frequent hospital visits would have an impact on the mentation of a child

The child is already at risk for developing mental illness because she has a chronic illness, he or she is likely to develop feelings of hopelessness while repeatedly going through trial and error through treatment as well as be at risk for self esteem issues when evaluating how different they are in comparison to other peers. Sickle cell anemia period can be traumatic on a child, in some cases it can cause symptoms of PTSD or PTSD itself. One of these reasons can be linked to the pain and severe distress of the illness itself as well as the medical procedures used to treat it which would include trials and error of medication, numerous blood transfusions, possible bone marrow transplant, and many other things. Not to mention the pain of not experiencing a normal childhood can put them at risk for depression or other types of mental illness.
The trauma surrounding them can also mess with their development, and tamper their fight or flight system and put the at risk for chronic anxiety issues as well including PTSD.
