Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.  A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications.  The good news is that strokes can be treated and prevented, and many fewer Americans die of stroke now than in the past.

Use the FAST test to find the symptoms of a stroke.

Face: Smile and see if one side of the face droops.

Arms: Raise both arms. Does one arm drop down?

Speech: Say a short phrase and check for slurred or strange speech.

Time: If the answer to any of these is yes, call 911 right away and write down the time when symptoms started.
