One cause of gray hair would be your genetics. Your hair follicles have pigment cells that create melanin. Melanin is a chemical that gives your hair its color. As you get older, those cells begin to die. Your hair strands become lighter and different shades of gray and white. Race also plays a role. On average, Caucasian Americans start to develop gray hair in their mid-30s. Asians start in their late 30s, and African-Americans start in their mid-40s.

As for baldness, the most common cause is a hereditary condition. It's called male-pattern baldness and female/pattern baldness. It starts with aging. With men, it causes receding hairlines and bald spots. Women start to get thinning hair. Heredity, or family history, is another common cause. Hormonal changes (such as from pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause) and certain medical condition can also play a role. Stressful events can cause temporary hair loss and some medications list hair loss as a side effect. Some hairstyles such as cornrows could also lead to hair loss.
