It was a beautiful spring morning and Myesha and Tyrell had taken their class of eager 4- year-olds outside to work in the school’s newly established garden. The children had been reading books about flowers and vegetables for several weeks, purchased plants and seeds at a local market, and even helped prepare the soil for planting. Today, they were going to weed and water the rows of lettuce, cucumbers, squash, and tomato plants that were beginning to grow. Myesha looked up from where she was working with the children and saw Jade running toward her with the watering can. Before Jade reached the garden gate, she suddenly dropped the can, fell to the sidewalk, and appeared to be having a seizure. Tyrell ran to check on Jade while Myesha tried to calm the other children.
). What immediate measures should Tyrell take to care for Jade?
). In what ways would his response differ if Jade had a known history of seizures or if she had never experienced a seizure prior to this one?
). Should he notify Jade’s family? At what point? Why?
). If Jade’s seizure continues longer than 3 to 4 times, what should the teachers do?
