Why do stores keep food separate from other products such as clothing and home supplies?

Maybe to keep the clothing  clean because it could get dirty around the food. Some people are allergic to some foods and don't want them any where near their clothes. To keep the store more organized.

To keep from contaminating food with foreign bacteria from the clothing themselves and people who come by and touch them and try them on, same for home supplies
