Myopia, or nearsightedness, results from a number of genetic and environmental factors. In 1999, Quinn et al studied the relation between myopia and ambient lighting at night (for example, from nightlights or room lights) during childhood. Question 1. The data were gathered by the following procedure, reported in the study. "Between January and June 1998, parents of children aged 2-16 years [...] that were seen as outpatients in a university pediatric ophthalmology clinic completed a questionnaire on the child’s light exposure both at present and before the age of 2 years." Was this study observational, or was it a controlled experiment? Explain.

Question 2. The study found that of the children who slept with a room light on before the age of 2, 55% were myopic. Of the children who slept with a night light on before the age of 2, 34% were myopic. Of the children who slept in the dark before the age of 2, 10% were myopic. The study concluded that, "The prevalence of myopia [...] during childhood was strongly associated with ambient light exposure during sleep at night in the first two years after birth."
Do the data support this statement? You may interpret "strongly" in any reasonable qualitative way.

A2012 report from the u.s. surgeon general stated: "another common practice is strategically locating tobacco-related marketing materials where young children will be exposed to them. tobacco industry executives acknowledge that products and advertising should be placed at eye level (pollay 2007), but in california, 48% of stores had at least one cigarette marketing item at or below 3 feet from the floor (feighery et al. 2001)." it was also noted that 25% of cigarette displays were next to candy. in addition, a national study found that about one-third of the stores had tobacco ads at low heights. after california banned counter displays, some stores place cigarettes in transparent displays so product brands could still be seen. why did some stores use transparent units to display the cigarettes? to comply with the new rules while still encouraging cigarette purchases via visual exposure to ensure children and minors are not exposed to cigarettes and their eye-catching packaging to minimize exposure to humidity, extending the shelf life of the cigarettes' tobacco to reduce the occurrence of shoplifting, since cigarettes are high-revenue items
